The Thriller LJ was down this morning, so it wasn't until I was in the car that I heard the radio announcer say "more on Michael Jackson's death in a minute." "What?" I gasped.
Whoa. What can you say? He was a star, one of the greatest. I listened to Thriller on the way to work, turned up loud.
I remember buying the Bad record (back when records still existed!), and I still love Billie Jean and Dirty Diana and Annie Are You Okay and Man in the Mirror, and ABC from when he was a little tacker. I even had a soft spot for Ben, just because of that amazing voice. That talent.
RIP Michael.

OTPs Just watched Big Screen Buddies, 20 to 1. As series go this isn’t Deep and Thoughtful Television, so I’m glad LOTR got in it at all. Frodo and Sam were number 5. And the comments by the presenters started with “hobbit bromance”! “It’s kinda gay.” “Sam wants a cuddle, but Frodo wants the Ring”. “There should be a sequel where those two get together.” “Just pash and get it over with already.” (While they played Nothing Compares 2 U in the background.) Perverts!
The lovely Ennis and Jack were number 7. And who beat our gorgeous hobbits? 4 was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 3 Lethal Weapon, 2, Rain Man, and 1, Thelma and Louise! Pretty good company. If only the hobbits had taken a Cadillac instead of a ship to Valinor...

Visions of sugar plums One of my fave blogs is called The Old Foodie. It's by an Aussie who writes about food history, olde recipes (you should see how many she has for gingerbread), and tidbits about food culture and the weirdest things people ever cooked. Love it. Anyway, one of her latest posts mentioned that prunes used to be an aphrodisiac. They were often served in brothels, as referenced by Shakespeare. Truly. Prunes. Also known as sugar plums.
And thus a F/S double drabble was born!

:k Hey Stef, thank you for my belated birthday gift! I shrieked with laughter so lucky no-one else was in the office. What a beautiful mousepad, Frodo and Sam in the lavender. Lovely.
So here’s a pressie in return. It is very very silly and I've had it on the hard drive for ages – a mobile text version of LOTR. Read at your own risk.

ANZAC Day I've just finished watching My Boy Jack on Youtube. The story of Rudyard Kipling and his son, who died in World War I. Very moving. Daniel Radcliffe was good as Jack, the lead excellent as Kipling - you want to scream at him and pity him - and I would never have picked Kim Cattrall as Mrs Kipling!
So, for today I will post Kipling's poem My Boy Jack. Lest we forget.
"Have you news of my boy Jack? " Not this tide. "When d'you think that he'll come back?" Not with this wind blowing, and this tide. "Has any one else had word of him?" Not this tide. For what is sunk will hardly swim, Not with this wind blowing, and this tide. "Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?" None this tide, Nor any tide, Except he did not shame his kind--- Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide. Then hold your head up all the more, This tide, And every tide; Because he was the son you bore, And gave to that wind blowing and that tide.

In which Peachy joins the 21st century With apologies to Tolkien, as usual, for nicking his poetry - this time The King Under the Mountain.
The pages slow in loading, The dialup that is long, The waits as old as mountains Are flatter than King Kong!
For broadband is upholden, My nerves shall be restrung, How gladly I procrastinate To Youtube songs re-sung.
It may end costing mountains. But swift it is and fun; My wealth shall flow in fountains And the bills shall endless run.
But I shall surf in gladness. The screen shall shine and burn, And sorrow fail and sadness When I to my comp return!

Not idly do the leaves of Lorien.. oh, sod it. Grrrrr. I went to a Chris Isaak concert last night (which was great) but my friend got very drunk (not so great) and I think she may have been responsible for my Evenstar pendant going astray. We've let the clean-up crew know, but I'll be lucky to see it again. Time to start scouring Ebay! I didn't wear it very often but I've got used to having it.
Anyway, a bit of silly is called for.

Her beauty and her terror

Last night's sunset in the back paddock.
Still the fires in Victoria burn. Our worst peacetime disaster ever. More than 180 people dead and that number expected to climb. You know it's bad when three quarters of Queensland is flooded and the flood victims keep saying, "those poor buggers in Victoria".
ETA: Two fires in town last night, one caused by an electrocuted possum. No property damage, but - bloody hell!

Aussie Aussie Aussie So I didn't win the short story comp. Bugger!
But it's Australia Day today and I feel like celebrating our Aussie stars of screen and sport and stage. In the past decade we've been kicking arse. Our Heath, Geoffrey Rush, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Eric Bana, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Rachel Griffiths, Frances O’Connor, Emily Watson, Anthony LaPaglia, Nicole Kidman, Sam Neil, Hugh Jackman, to name a few. Hey, I never dreamed that when I finally saw a LOTR film it would have Aussies in leading roles!
I found this little tribute on Youtube which shows just a few Aussie notables. Great choice of song. Enjoy!

PS, a very belated thank you to all who did special things on my birthday. *snogs flist*

*squees wildly* "Dear Peachy, You may remember entering my Steffi McBride short story competition at the end of last year. I was slightly overwhelmed by the number of entries and quite shocked by how high the standard of many of them was. As a result I have drawn up a short list of ten stories which I would like to put up the Steffi website, prior to making a final selection of a winner and two runners-up. I would very much like to include your story in this short list."
WOOHOO!
Stay tuned to steffimcbride.com! The comp was for a story on modern celebrity. I did a futuristic-themed one. The main prize is for a writing mentorship, but I'm delighted my origific will be featured on a website like this.
Off to work for the first time in weeks now!

This and that Hey, frodosweetstuff, thank you for your adorable Christmas card! You naughty thing, it's gorgeous. I wrote you a present. See below.
Have disgusting summer holiday cold, it'd better clear up soon.
Incidentally, while faffing about on the Net I found something called the Elvish Love Ring. "The Love Ring is available in silver. The ring has been designed as a wedding band for couples as the wording (in Elvish) translates as follows. "One ring to show our love, One ring to bind us. One ring to seal our love and forever to entwine us".
I can't make up my mind as to whether this is a) a tacky take on the Ring which was like, EVOL
or b) A romantic take on the Ring, such as Take that, Sauron, You Arse.
My first impression tended to a). But I wanna know what happens if a couple divorces. Do they take the ring to Mordor?
Ahem. Anyway, onto the fic! It's pretty much G and yes, it includes Hobbit Email. ( Twelve Days of Yule )

Meanwhile, down in the paddock

“Don’t look now, Ethel, but there’s a girl in blue pyjamas heading our way with a camera.”
“What for?”
“Maybe she's seen that film Australia and wants to show people that real roos don't look like that."
“Not with a zoom like that she won’t.”
